The PARTICIPATE Parent Carer Forum
Hi, my name is Emily Turley, I am currently a Teaching Assistant, working with children who have special needs at a local primary school. I am also a mum to Louis who is aged 7 and Lola-Grace who is 9 months.
Louis was born with a chromosome deletion (5q14.3), which has left him severely disabled. I have had lots of experience working with children who have special needs in a variety of settings. However since Louis was born I have experience on an every day level and I now also understand how important it is for me to be an advocate for Louis.
I wanted to be part of the Participate steering group, so that I can put my personal views across as a parent/career but to also fight for the specialist care and facilities that these children deserve and are not always provided with.
Forum MemberMy name is Esther I am a mom of 2 lovely children. My daughter Florence has a rare chromosome deletion and also has Autism, so have been in this strange special needs world for 7 years now. I also help run a support group called Lifted Spirits which enables parents and carers to meet over tea and cake for support and chat. Because of my 2 roles I feel it is important to be part of this team so i can be a voice for parents and carers like myself and to also fight for important provisions needed for these children/adults and there carers.
Forum MemberI am Elaine and I am a proud mommy to Sam, who has autism and complex communication difficulties. Sam was condition was diagnosed 4 years ago, and I quickly realised how important it is to surround yourself with parents who understand. No-one should go through the heartache of discovering that their child is disabled alone. Esther and I set up a support group for parents about 18 months ago and we now have a great group of parents all supporting each other, in good and difficult times. I am proud to be part of the Participate team, providing a voice for parents and their disabled children, and ensuring the children and the Carers get the support they need.
Forum MemberMy names is Rachel Marrey and I have lived in Stourbridge for the last twenty years. I have three children: Nathan 17, Joe 15 and Jude 7. My youngest has many challenges to face in his life and I feel I have learnt a lot over the last seven years caring for his needs. I work in a school working with Pupil Premium children. I would like to share the knowledge I have gained over the last seven years with others. I want to help other parents who face the many challenges that arise raising a disabled child.
